Skilled Companion Dogs

 - Skilled companion dogs are fully trained to alert their owners to sounds in the home. They enhance their owners’ independence and can dramatically improve the quality of their lives. Skilled companion dogs are also fully obedience trained.

- For a variety of reasons, these dogs do not have the skills or temperament to be in public settings. Skilled companion dogs are NOT hearing dogs and do NOT have public access rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

- If, however, you want a dog that will alert you to sounds at home AND you don’t have any significant need to have them in public places (for example, you don’t need the dog to alert you to sounds in your workplace) a skilled companion dog may be a GREAT fit for you.

- Since skilled companion dogs take less time to train or, you may be able to have a skilled companion dog placed with you more quickly than a person who’s lifestyle requires a hearing dog with public access rights.
