Hypoallergenic Dogs

  • If you have always thought that you couldn’t have a service dog due to your allergies or those of a family member, think again!

  • People with allergies can usually manage quite well with hypoallergenic breeds such as Poodles. This breed is highly intelligent with excellent retrieving skills and scenting ability that contribute to their success as service dogs. Plus they have a fun sense of humor!

  • When some people imagine Poodles, they might think of a show dog with the distinctive “continental cut” - which is NOT appealing to everyone.

  • Service dog Poodles generally have more practical grooming styles - such as Juniper and Charlie, the dogs in picture above (images courtesy of Karen Winters.)

  • Poodles also come in three convenient sizes. Toy Poodles stand no more than 10” tall, Miniatures are 15” or under, and Standard Poodles are more than 15” tall.

  • The very reason that allergy sufferers can cope with hypoallergenic breeds - no shedding - creates another important dynamic - significant grooming needs. If you want to commit to a hypoallergenic breed, you will need to be ready to learn how to groom them yourself (and do it regularly) or pay for regular, professional grooming, which is costly.

  • Dogs On the Go prioritizes using rescue dogs as trainees. However, it is nearly impossible to find hypoallergenic breeds such as Poodles of the right age and temperament for service dog work through shelters or rescues.

  • As a result, you will need to use a different approach to finding a good, hypoallergenic service dog candidate. We can assist you with finding a reputable, conscientious breeder that strives for a successful service dog temperament.
