Private Coaching
Do you have a pet that you would like to train as a hearing dog? Dogs On the Go can help! We offer in-person comprehensive assessments and virtual or in person private coaching for potential hearing dog or skilled companion dog trainees.
We do NOT train your dog for you - rather, we train you to train your dog.
We use evidence-based, highly successful POSITIVE dog training methods.
-We cannot guarantee that your pet will be suitable or successful as a service dog trainee - but we can guarantee that we will give you an honest assessment of your dog’s potential.
There is no set length of time it takes to fully train a hearing dog via coaching. The more consistently you train your dog and follow your coach’s instructions, the faster your dog will learn.
Plan to have your dog in training for a minimum of one year or more.
All hearing dog trainees must pass a public access test before they can graduate from the program.
Successful hearing dog or skilled companion dog trainees are:
Age 4 or younger
People focused
High energy
Playful with toys
Food motivated
Physically healthy
Non-aggressive towards people
Additionally, hearing dog trainees are:
Generally confident in public places
Non-aggressive towards other dogs
People friendly
Good with children
Resilient - they bounce back quickly if something startles or frightens them
The dog breeds (including mixes!) with the highest rates of success as hearing dogs are: 1) terriers and 2) working breeds.
Fees for most private service dog coaching are, on average, $100 for an assessment and $80 per training session. At Dogs On the Go, we strive to make coaching more affordable - while at the same time utilizing staff resources effectively and generating income for the program.
